The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Return with THE WICKED TRINITY

A wicked coven of high school witches are coming for Sabrina Spellman - and the rest of the magic world - in their first more mature horror one-shot.

SUMMARY

  • The Wicked Trinity witches are ready to dominate Greendale High School in their quest to be the most powerful coven.

  • Meet Amber, Jade, and Sapphire, each drawing power from wind, fire, and water - a trio set on magical supremacy.

  • Get ready for a darker, more mature story from Archie Comics, inspired by Charmed and The Craft, blending fantasy and horror.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina may have ended after its fourth season on Netflix, but the adventures of Sabrina and friends continue on in Archie Comics. This June, a trio of witchy nemeses hit Greendale High School, determined to become the world’s most powerful coven. The Wicked Trinity characters debuted in a more kid-focused series by Archie Comics last year, and this will be their first step into something more mature.

Inspired by series like Charmed and films like The Craft, I knew there was so much potential to build up this coven in a story that beautifully blends magical fantasy with horror.

Jade, Amber, and Sapphire - who draw their powers from wind, fire, and water, respectively - are determined to steal status from all other magic users and put themselves at the top of the magical pecking order.

Written by Sam Maggs (Star Trek: Picard’s Academy) with art by Lisa Sterle (Glow) and Ellie Wright (Red Sonja), there are many witchy influences on the creative team. Lisa Sterle is known for her Modern Witch Tarot, bringing a cool, updated take on the art of a classic tarot deck. Sam Maggs was actually named after a witch - Samantha from the classic TV series Bewitched.

The Wicked Trinity Are Ready for a Chilling Adventure

Amber, Jade, and Sapphire graduate to a darker, more mature story

The Wicked Trinity consists of three witches: Amber Nightstone, Jade Kazane and Sapphire Gill. The trio first appeared in 2023's Sabrina Annual Spectacular #1 in a story written by Jamie L. Rotante, penciled by Holly G!, inked by Jim Amash, colored by Glenn Whitmore and lettered by Jack Morelli. The story is a classic Archie Comics-style tale of a group of witches trying to gain more magical abilities. Rotante, who is also the Archie Comics Senior Director of Editorial, said that she wanted to expand their story into one in the style of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

What I especially loved about these magical teens is that they could seamlessly transcend from classic- Archie stories into more mature, even horror, stories. I was eager to start developing their world with a modern sensibility, taking cues from the great work of Kelly Thompson and Veronica Fish on our Sabrina the Teenage Witch series, and Sarah Kuhn and Carola Borelli on our recent Darkling one-shot. Inspired by series like Charmed and films like The Craft, I knew there was so much potential to build up this coven in a story that beautifully blends magical fantasy with horror."

Writer Sam Maggs announced The Wicked Trinity one-shot on Instagram, adding, "Real witches writing real witches - that’s how we do things at Archie Comics! I grew up absolutely obsessed with everything witchcraft, devouring every book series I could about teen witches. That makes The Wicked Trinity a dream project for me." Lisa Sterle added, "I love to create stories in which girls find their own power, both from within themselves and through their friendships and coven.” Though this sounds like the coven draws power from each other, the story summary suggests they might just hex themselves in a power struggle.

Morally Grey Witches, In Full Color

Archie Comics has had a lot of dark academia-themed stories, featuring teens with magic abilities surviving powerful enemies and secrets, alongside normal high school issues. This one-shot may be testing the waters to see if The Wicked Trinity is really ready to face off with Sabrina Spellman in a YA/teen comics space. The excitement for these stories is already there on the creative team, as writer Sam Maggs said, “The power and energy of teen girls is absolutely unmatched.” Fans of both The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Archie Comics will have to wait until June to see if The Wicked Trinity knows how to cast a spell.
